Registration Of Qualifications

The Kenya National qualifications Authority (KNQA) undertakes to register in the KNQF Basic education, Middle level and higher education qualifications conferred or awarded by professional bodies in Kenya (in collaboration with training and educational institutions of learning) in accordance with the Kenya National Qualifications Framework Act no. 22 of 2014 and Section 14 of KNQF Regulations, 2018.In order for a professional qualification to be registered on the KNQF it must:

  1. Be submitted to KNQA by a recognised professional body in accordance with an application process determined by KNQA;
  2. Be developed, conferred and subject to being revoked in terms of the rules, legislation and/or international conventions applicable to the recognised professional body;
  3. Be monitored in terms of the rules, legislation and/or international conventions applicable to the recognised professional body;
  4. Be part of a progression pathway which may include an occupational pathway;
  5. Be linked to a validated database of the names of individuals conferred the professional qualification;
  6. Include, as an initial requirement, an underlying qualification(s), which may include an occupational qualification(s);
  7. In the case of an individual’s qualification having been obtained at an institution not registered in Kenya, the individual applying to a professional body for a professional qualification, must ensure that the qualification has been evaluated by KNQA and found to be comparable to the Kenya underlying qualification;
  8.  Include as general requirements, experiential learning, and recognition of prior learning and/or practical experience;
  9. Be an academic professional qualification;
  10. Payment of requisite fee (See service fees charged by KNQA); Ksh 10,000 .

Registration Process

Applications for approval and registration of qualification (s) must satisfy the conditions set in section 6 (2) of KNQF regulations 2018.

  1. Complete application Form KNQA/L/002 set out in the First Schedule of KNQF regulation 2018;
  2. The Qualification must be Structured in the format shown in Annex 1 below;
  3. Submit complete application form plus all Attachments to the KNQA offices at 6th floor Uchumi House, Aga Khan Walk for evaluation; These attachments must include;
  • Title, level, credit value and awarding authority of the Qualification;
  • Proof of Ownership of qualifications;
  • Rationale/feasibility study for the Qualification;
  • Proof of stakeholder involvement in the development of the Qualification;
  • Entry Requirements, including various pathways for admission into the qualification;
  • No. of learners that have been awarded the qualification; and projected enrollment of the qualification for the next 4 years;
  • Commitment to furnish KNQA with all learners that have or will graduate with the qualification;
  • Structure of the Qualification (as shown in annex 1 below), delivery methods, and other regulations guidance learners about the qualifications;
  • Regulations on Assessment and Quality Assurance of the Qualification;
  • Staffing, Other resources and student support services required to deliver the qualification;
  • In case of TVET institutions, Approval by relevant External Quality assurance agency (such as TVETA);
  • Legal registration of the Institution;
  • Any other support documents;
  • Payment of requisite fee of Ksh. 10,000 (See service fees charged by KNQA)

The Kenya National qualifications Authority (KNQA) undertakes to register in the KNQF Basic education, Middle level and higher education qualifications conferred or awarded by foreign bodies in Kenya (in collaboration with training and educational institutions of learning) in accordance with the Kenya National Qualifications Framework Act no. 22 of 2014 and Section 7 (3) of KNQF Regulations, 2018.In order for a foreign qualification to be registered on the KNQF it must:

  1. Be submitted to KNQA by a recognized qualifications awarding body in the country of origin in accordance with an application process determined by KNQA;
  2. Be developed, conferred and subject to being revoked in terms of the rules, legislation and/or international conventions applicable to the recognized qualifications awarding body;
  3. Be monitored in terms of the rules, legislation and/or international conventions applicable to the recognized qualifications awarding body;
  4. Be part of a progression pathway which may include an occupational pathway;
  5. Include, as an initial requirement, an underlying qualification(s), which may include an occupational qualification(s);
  6.  Include as general requirements, experiential learning, and recognition of prior learning and/or practical experience ; and
  7. Payment of requisite fee of Ksh.20,000 (See service fees charged by KNQA).
