PREAMBLE

The Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) is established under the Kenya National Qualifications Framework Act No. 22 of 2014. The mandate of the Authority is to establish and maintain the Kenya National Qualifications Framework (KNQF). This inter alia involves; Establish standards to recognize qualifications obtained within and outside Kenya; Develop a system of competence, lifelong learning and attainment of national qualifications; Align qualifications obtained in Kenya with global benchmarks to promote national and trans-national mobility of workers; strengthen the national quality assurance systems for national qualifications; and facilitate mobility and progression within education and training.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), is the process used to identify, assess and certify an individual’s knowledge, skills and competencies against prescribed standards or learning outcomes regardless of when, where and how they were acquired. RPL aims to promote access to education, employability, mobility, self-esteem, progression and fair chances to the disadvantaged, discouraged and the traditionally marginalized. RPL can be the policy instrument that gives people wings to fly from informality to formality. Outcomes of prior learning in all contexts of life can be validated, recognized, certified to give people wings to new perspectives and opportunities in education and training, employment, entrepreneurship and better jobs. Across the world, regions and countries are increasingly recognizing the value of non-formal and informal learning and many are establishing systems to acknowledge, skills and competencies gained through non formal and informal modalities.
